The Torah speaks of two distinct types of power: koach and oz. Koach refers to raw, brute force, physical strength, and energy. It is the power that enables us to lift weights, run marathons, and overcome physical obstacles. In the biblical narrative, we see numerous examples of individuals who possessed incredible physical strength, such as Samson and the mighty men of valour.

While koach is often associated with physical prowess, it is important to note that it is also connected to spiritual strength. The Talmud teaches that “koach is like a flood that destroys,” implying that if not harnessed properly, physical power can lead to destruction. However, when channeled through spiritual discipline and a connection to the divine, koach can be a powerful tool for positive change.

Chassidus emphasises the importance of cultivating both physical and spiritual strength. By engaging in regular physical exercise, we can strengthen our bodies and minds, while simultaneously connecting with our higher selves through Torah and mitzvos. This holistic approach to wellness allows us to harness the full potential of our koach, enabling us to live a life of vitality and purpose.

Physical fitness is not arbitrary or optional; it is part of your responsibility to G‑d.
